Jennifer’s Story

When I was nine, my family stopped by my dad’s alma mater on our way down to the beach. We went to the bookstore and I immediately gravitated to the book section. I selected a book about an educational psychologist who helped a young student with severe emotional needs. I handed it to my dad and he asked if I was sure that was what I wanted for my souvenir. I said yes. I devoured that book and knew that someday I wanted to help people get better.

When I began graduate school at age 22, I was certain that my calling was to be a full-time therapist in private practice. As I gained more experience, I learned that there were other aspects of the field of psychology that called to me and deserved exploration.  In the 20+ years since I completed school, I have taught physicians about psychological concepts that affect medical conditions, preschoolers about resilience, and adults about mindful self-compassion. I developed a trauma program for mothers living in a shelter for homeless women, a self-compassion program for health care providers, and a resilience promotion program for school-aged children. I have consulted with physicians and other health care providers, parents, and school personnel. I write an ongoing blog and have had the privilege of writing peer-reviewed book chapters and journal articles. I have presented at national conferences, community events, school assemblies, and parent association meetings. Each of these experiences informs my approach to private practice and gives me an opportunity to continue expanding my comfort zone and remain a life-long learner.
