Therapy Approach

My approach to counseling is a hat tip to the two graduate programs I attended. From my counseling psychology program, I learned the importance of helping clients identify their strengths and how to use their strengths to compensate for areas that are developing or a struggle. From my clinical psychology program, I learned how to, with a client’s collaboration, identify areas for improvement, generate a treatment plan and create a structured way to assess progress. My counseling style with adult clients is best described as client-centered, collaborative, and tailored to a person’s unique goals. I have training in dynamic theory, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma-informed cognitive behavioral therapy, family systems, interpersonal processing and mindful self-compassion. My interventions are a combination of these theories and are based on finding solutions to a client’s goals and areas of struggle.

My therapy style with children, adolescents and families includes aspects of my work with adults but tends to be more directive and systematic. My goal is to help children and teens address emotional, behavioral or relational issues in a strategic manner that promotes self-esteem, self-compassion, developmentally appropriate functioning and healthy relationships. I work collaboratively with parents and teachers to ensure that what we are addressing in individual therapy sessions is reinforced by the adults in their lives. I apply a similar framework to couple’s therapy.

I am licensed in California, New Mexico, and Texas and provide tele-based therapy sessions to Florida residents. I also am authorized to provide tele-psychological services to people residing in or visiting states that have enacted PSYPACT legislation.
